Growing up in beer-town Milwaukee, I always felt a bit different.
I’ll be honest, it took me a long time to see my sensitivity as anything other than a weakness. Growing up, I was always the “sensitive one” – the one who cried easily, who felt everything so deeply. In a world that often seems to value toughness and stoicism, it was easy to feel like there was something wrong with me.
But you know what? Over time, I’ve come to realize that my sensitivity is actually a gift. It’s what allows me to connect with others on a profound level, to pick up on the subtleties of emotion and energy that others might miss. Sure, it can be overwhelming at times, but it’s also what makes me who I am.
I like to think of it this way: just like a finely tuned instrument can pick up on the slightest variations in sound, an empath’s sensitivity allows them to tune into the nuances of the world around them. And just like that instrument, an empath’s sensitivity requires care and attention to stay in harmony.
For me, that means learning to set boundaries, to take time for myself when I need it, and to surround myself with people and environments that nourish my soul. It means learning to trust my intuition, even when it goes against what others might expect or understand.
Most of all, it means learning to see my sensitivity not as a liability, but as an essential part of who I am. It’s the source of my creativity, my compassion, my ability to deeply understand and connect with others. In a world that can often feel harsh and disconnected, I believe that empaths have a special role to play in bringing more light and healing.
So if you’re an empath reading this, know that you’re not alone. Your sensitivity is a beautiful part of who you are, and the world needs your unique gifts. Trust yourself, take care of yourself, and never apologize for feeling deeply. Your sensitivity is your strength, and it’s something to be honored and celebrated.
Although my “bread and butter” life has been in information technology, I’ve always been drawn to writing and publishing – writing about “things that matter”, i.e., self-improvement, human relations, politics – writing about things that I’m passionate about.
My blog, Genuine Empath, focuses on content to aid self-identified Empaths to live fully and care about others without losing themselves in the process.
My other blog, WiredForALegendaryLife.com, features self-improvement content.
